The Belmond-Klemme softball team started the season with conference play May 22, hosting the Warriors of North Union.
The Broncos were the first to score as Haley Beminio hit a single that scored Jennah Meyer and Addison McMurray to make the score 2-0. Maddison Dougherty took the mound for the Broncos, giving up only two hits in three innings.
The Warriors came back and scored five runs in the top of the fourth, making the score 4-2. Molly Hartwig answered back in the bottom of the inning with a single and she scored off a hit by Meyer to put the home team within one run.
The Warriors scored six runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth inning to take a commanding 11-3 lead. B-K tried their best to come back in the bottom of the 7th inning as Bemino, once again had a great hit – a two-run double to centerfield. But it wouldn’t be enough as B-K ultimately lost, 12-5.
Beminio led the team with two hits and four RBIs.
The Bronco girls continued conference play May 24, hosting the Golden Bears of Algona Garrigan. Rain on the field in Algona forced the move to Blair Field in Belmond.
The Golden Bears jumped to a 6-0 lead through three innings before the Broncos answered in a big way.
Lead-off hitter Addison McMurray wasted no time crushing a home run over the outfield fence to put B-K on the scoreboard. Second batter Madi Barrus also wanted to be part of the fun. She followed McMurray with her own home run over the left field fence, getting the crowd on their feet one more time. AG fought back in the sixth, adding back two runs and pushing their lead to 10-2.
In the seventh inning, Vada Negrete gave it her all with a lead-off triple to the fence. An error by AG led to Negrete scoring and making the score 10-3. But that is all the closer the Broncos would get, taking their second loss of the season.
Barrus led the team with three hits, followed by Beminio with two.
