The Belmond-Klemme softball team opened the first round of regional play in Sheffield July 7.
B-K came ready to play from the get-go, scoring in the first inning. Addison McMurray led off with a single, advanced to third on passed balls. It was a sacrifice fly to left field by Allison Barrus that allowed McMurray to score.
Emilee Dougherty started the second inning with a double, was left stranded. The Broncos retired the Warhawks in order in the first two innings.
Madison and Allison Barrus each singled in the third, and scored on hits collected by Ashlynn Willms and Molly Hartwig. The Bronco led 3-0. B-K retired the Warhawks’ seventh, eighth and ninth batters in order.
The Broncos added three runs in the fourth, starting with a lead-off walk to Aubrey Eckhoff. She came around to score when McMurray hit a triple down the left field line. McMurray scored off a single by Madison Barrus. The Broncos added one more run to close out the inning and were up 6-0.
B-K took the first round of regional play, 6-1.
The Broncos traveled to Manly July 10 to play the Central Springs Panthers, ranked fifth in Class 2A.
The Panthers had three runs in the first inning. The Broncos struggled to make contact off the strong pitching from CS and were retired in order during the first four innings.
The Panthers strong hitting continued, as CS added five hits in the third inning to pull ahead 8-0. Two errors by the Panthers in the top of the fifth inning gave the Broncos hope – Ashlynn Willms and Ava Negrete both reached first base but both were stranded to end the inning.
CS ended things early with three more runs in the fourth inning to take the win 11-0.
The Broncos ended the season with a 13-14 record and graduated three seniors: shortstop Madison Barrus, pitcher Maddison Dougherty and centerfielder Addison McMurray.
