The Belmond-Klemme girls traveled to Aplington-Parkersburg Feb. 16 for a Class 2A regional quarterfinal.
A-P jumped to an early 6-0 lead before Ashlynn Willms hit her first three-pointer of the night. The Broncos battled back, with Addison McMurray hitting a two-point jump shot to bring B-K within one point, 6-5. The Falcons went on a 12-point run to end the quarter and the score was 18-5 at quarter’s end.
Willms hit another three-pointer to put B-K back on the scoreboard, while the defense held the Falcons to limited points in the second quarter. On an out of bounds play, McMurray found Madison Barrus for two more points and the foul. She made 1-1 at the free throw line. With the quarter winding down, McMurray hit back-to-back three-pointers, but A-P held on to the lead 30-17 at the break.
In the second half, A-P scored first, but McMurray answered back with her third three-pointer. The Falcons played tough defense, giving the Broncos limited opportunities to score. Jennah Meyer hit a two-point basket at the end of the third period, and the score was 51-31.
B-K did not give up, playing tough defense to the end of the game. McMurray collected a steal and lay-up to start the final quarter. Bronco rebounding was solid throughout the night, with Allison Barrus collecting an offensive rebound and put-back for two points under the basket. A-P added another nine points before Madison Roberts would take the ball to the basket, was fouled, and made both free throws. B-K’s season ended on the 65-37 loss.
