The Belmond-Klemme boys traveled to Clarion Feb. 15 for the first round of district basketball.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows was the first to score before Triston Yoder hit a baseline three-pointer to tie the game. The Broncos battle with the Cowboys, going back and forth during the first quarter. Carson Lane found Kaleb Carlson for a two-point basket, followed by a three-pointer by Jordan Meyer to bring the Broncos within four points, 17-13. With seconds winding down, Lane hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to make the score 17-16.
Yoder found Carlson for a two-point basket at the start of the second quarter to give the Broncos the lead, 18-17. Carlson added another two points before the Cowboys went on a five-point run. The Bronco defense came up big in the clutch to end the first half with good defensive rebounding by Carlson and Yoder. The Broncos trailed 35-30 at the half.
B-K was the first team to score as play resumed – Meyer had an early steal and lay-up for two points. Another steal by Carlson, who gave the ball to Lane for a two-point shot, put B-K behind by only one point, 35-34. But the Cowboys ended the third period on a 15-2 run, as B-K fell behind 50-36.
In the fourth quarter, back-to-back steals by Carlson and points from Meyer and Carlson brought B-K within ten points, 50-40. The Bronco defense refused to give up, working their hardest to overcome the top seed. Clutch free throws by Yoder and Carlson – who hit 3-4 – helped the Bronco score. As the game clock was coming to an end, Meyer hit a three-pointer but the Bronco season closed with a 68-59 loss.
