The Belmond-Klemme boys travelled to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura for the first round of district basketball Feb. 17.
GHV went up early 2-0 before Jordan Meyer hit a three-pointer to give the Broncos their first lead. The Cardinals went on a seven point run before Triston Yoder came up with a steal and scored two points, making the score 14-5. Yoder was fouled late and hit one at the free throw line, making the score 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.
In a second period, Carson Lane added two points early, followed by Kaleb Carlson’s under the basket score to make the game 18-11. Dylan Anderson headed to the line and hit one for two, followed up by Lane hitting both his free throws. As the quarter was coming to an end, Lane scored back-to-back baskets (he totalled 12 points in the first half), as the Broncos trailed 33-25.
Anderson had a backdoor basket for the first points of the second half. GHV was in foul trouble, sending Lane to the line where he hit both free throws. Great defense by the Broncos allowed for a steal and a Yoder three-point shot that put the Broncos within seven, 40-33. Carlson followed with a three-pointer, pulling the Broncos within four points. A backdoor cut by Anderson brought B-K within two points. GHV’s four-point play ended the third quarter, and the Cardinals were ahead 52-44.
In the final quarter, Jaace Wiedemann was the first to score off a pass from Lane. B-K continued to have a great offensive second half. Lane followed up with a drive to the basket as B-K trailed 57-49. Meyer headed to the free throw line and went 2-2. The Cardinals’ 8-2 run over clinched the win, 78-56.
The Broncos finish the season 5-17.
