The Belmond-Klemme Broncos played three good quarters of football at Lake Mills Oct. 22 in the last game of the season. But the Bulldogs took over the final period to win 38-28.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first with a long drive. B-K methodically marched down the field, using up nearly all the first quarter. Clayton Pletsch scored on a nine-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed. B-K led 6-0 with 3:30 left in the period.
It took only ten seconds for the second Bronco score to happen. On the first play from scrimmage when the Bulldogs got the ball back, the quarterback threw a pass that Cameron Roberts picked off and took it 39 yards into the endzone. This time, the two-point conversion run by Pletsch was successful, and the Broncos led 14-0 at the 3:29 mark.
After exchanging punts several times, the Bulldogs finally scored on the second play of the second quarter. The conversion attempt failed, and the score was 14-6.
LM scored again with only 56 seconds left in the half. Another two-point attempt failed, and B-K was still ahead 14-12.
While most other games would end the first half with that score, it was not true of this battle.
The Broncos got the ball on their own 25 with 48 second left. After a 16-yard run, the Broncos took a time-out. On the next play, Pletsch took the ball on a 60-yard race to the endzone. The conversion attempt failed, and B-K led 20-12 with 27 seconds left.
The Bulldogs were set up on their own 35-yard line, and it took only two plays for LM to score on a trick play. The two-point conversion was successful, and the score was tied at 20.
The furious scoring flurry was not over yet. With two seconds on the clock, LM kicked off. Pletsch returned the kick for an 80-yard touchdown. A successful two-point pass to Nicholas Jenison put the Broncos back in the lead, 28-20, when the halftime buzzer finally sounded.
The Broncos took the second half kick-off, and made progress down the field until turning the ball over on downs.
LM took four plays to tighten the score to 28-26.
The Broncos fumbled the ball away on the next drive, but the Bulldogs were unable to convert the turnover into points.
B-K was not so lucky with the next turnover. LM recovered a fumble at midfield, scored, and grabbed their first lead of the game, 32-28, with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Broncos had a chance to rally, but a five-minute drive stalled just at the edge of the LM red zone, and B-K turned the ball over on downs. The Bulldogs scored the final touchdown with 2:50 left in the game.
The Broncos ended the season 0-9.
