The Belmond-Klemme girls basketball team opened up the 2020-21 season against the top-ranked team in the state, Algona Garrigan, Dec. 1.
The Golden Bears jumped to a 6-0 lead before B-K scored with Jennah Meyer hitting two of four from the free throw line. The tall defense gave the Broncos trouble as they fell behind 12-2. Madi Barrus had a steal and lay-up to make the score 18-4. The Golden Bears increased the lead before Allie Barrus had a steal and was fouled going up for a basket. She made both of her free throws and the Broncos trailed 29-6 after the first quarter.
B-K started off the second quarter with a steal by Allie Barrus and she scored to make the score 30-8. AG went on a 20-2 scoring run before Brooke Pralle scored. AG dominated on offense and defense, closing out the first half with a 58-12 lead.
An 8-0 run in the second half by the Golden Bears gave the Broncos more trouble. Meyer was fouled under the basket and made both her free throws to make the score 66-14. The defense had a few good plays late, including Molly Hartwig’s defensive rebound and drive to the basket for the lay-up. Hartwig scored again before the game ended as the Broncos lost 76-18.
The Broncos welcomed the Lake Mills Bulldogs for the second conference game of the week Dec. 4.
The Broncos started off big with an 8-0 lead as Madison Barrus had two steals and four points. Jennah Meyer shot a lay-up and was fouled on her second trip down the court making both free throws. The Broncos seemed to be unstoppable as Addison McMurray hit a long three-pointer putting B-K up 11-2. The fast Bronco defense led to McMurray scoring again, along with Allie Barrus as the Broncos held a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, Molly Hartwig hit a three-pointer followed up by Jennah Meyer going one for two at the free throw line. Madison Barrus was fouled four more times in the quarter and hit six of eight from the free throw line. B-K headed into the locker room with a 37-19 lead.
To start the second half, McMurray hit her second three-pointer, followed by Ashlynn Willms’ three-pointer. McMurray was unstoppable – hitting another three-pointer and an offensive rebound and put-back – as B-K held the largest lead of the night, 53-30.
LM went on a five-point run at the start of the final period before the Broncos were back to domination. Hartwig hit a jumper for two points, followed by Madison Barrus’ two free throws, to advance the lead to 61-40. Brooke Pralle and Madi Roberts each scored baskets before the game ended. The Broncos took their first conference win 65-45.
The Top of Iowa Conference crossover game was held Dec. 5 in Belmond when the Central Springs Panthers came to play.
Addison McMurray started the game off with a bang, hitting back-to-back three-pointers. A jumper in the lane by Madison Barrus extended the Broncos’ lead to 8-2. Great offense gave McMurray, Jennah Meyer and Ashlynn Willms all opportunities to score as the Broncos took a 16-7 lead to end the quarter.
Meyer scored on an out of bounds play at the start of the second quarter, followed by Molly Hartwig’s threepointer as the B-K lead grew to 25-12.
In the second half, the defense would continue to have a great game with steals by Meyer and Madison Barrus. McMurray also found her way to the basket with two jump shots in the lane and two rebounds. Late in the game, Amara Kelley scored her first points of the season, going 1-2 from the free throw line, followed up by Madison Barrus hitting one from the charity stripe. The Broncos won their second game of the season, 39-21.
