The Belmond-Klemme softball team started off last week against Central Springs, the Top of Iowa Conference leader.

CS put up nine runs in the first two innings, making it tough for the Broncos to stage a comeback. After adding another two runs in the third, the Panthers led 11-0.

But the Broncos would not give up. Allie Barrus led off the fifth inning with a single, followed by Taylor Grissom’s single. Two errors by the Panthers allowed both Broncos to score. A fielder’s choice brought home another run. A walk let B-K put up four runs. However, the Panthers answered back with four runs, ending the game early 14-4.

The girls took a tough loss in Saint Ansgar June 12, but a triple play made for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a few Broncos.

The Saints began the game scoring four runs as B-K struggled to get the bats going. In the top of the second, Allie Barrus hit a lead-off single and then came around to score off two errors. Addison McMurray executed an over the shoulder catch that caught the Saint runners off guard. McMurray threw to Allie Barrus at third base since both runners were already in motion. The runners were out as Allie Barrus threw to Molly Hartwig at second base who then fired the ball to Haley Beminio at first. B-K used that momentum in the top of the third as Madi Barrus led off with a single and scored on an infielder error. Allie Barrus doubled to left field, putting two runners into scoring position. Taylor Grissom stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run double to make the score 7-4.

B-K added another run in the fifth, but lost 12-5.

The Broncos hosted Aplington Parkersburg June 13 for a non-conference game.  B-K was evenly matched with the Falcons, but just couldn’t put together hits and runs as the Broncos fell 16-5. Numerous errors from the Broncos made it tough to come up with the win.

In the final game of the week, the Broncos hosted Nashua-Plainfield. N-P scored first with one run in the top of the first inning. Madi Barrus reached base after being hit by a pitch, and scored on a hit by Ashlyn Willms to make the score 1-1. B-K jumped into the lead in the second as Maddison Dougherty was walked. A single by Molly Hartwig moved Dougherty into scoring position. McMurray put the ball in play, forcing an error by the Huskie’s shortstop that scored Dougherty. N-P answered back, adding two runs in both the third and fifth innings.

A leadoff double by Hartwig started the sixth inning off on the right foot, followed by a walk to Jennah Meyer. McMurray hit an RBI single before Madi Barrus laid down a bunt single that loaded the bases. McMurray scored from third on a wild pitch as Madi Barrus came all the way around from first base on a misthrow back to the pitcher, making the score 6-5 in B-K’s favor. Allie Barrus reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by Taylor Grissom.

B-K held the lead and took the 7-5 win.
