The Belmond-Klemme softball team had a short week due to weather. The girls hosted the Lake Mills Bulldogs June 19.
The Broncos were the first to score. In the bottom of the third inning, Allie Barrus was walked and scored off a fielder’s choice from the bat of Taylor Grissom. The Bulldogs answered back with three runs, as two errors cost B-K the lead.
The Broncos came back to tie up the game in the fourth as Allie Barrus was once again walked. Ashlyn Willms reached first on an error, and Maddison Dougherty hit a single that scored both runners. The Broncos continued to score with Madi Barrus collecting a walk and Haley Beminio crushing the ball over the left-center field fence for a two-run homer that pushed the score to 5-3. Allie Barrus reached first on an error and scored again, thanks to a hit by Maddison Dougherty.
Errors by B-K coupled with three hits by LM in the sixth, caused worry as five Bulldog runs crossed the plate. The Broncos added two runs by Addison McMurray and Madi Barrus in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 8-8.
The Bulldogs were not ready to give up and took advantage of a B-K error to score two runs in the last inning to claim the lead once again. B-K put up a fight, scoring one run, but left bases loaded at the end of the game, taking the loss 10-9.
In the last game of the week, the girls traveled to Britt to play conference rival West Hancock. The Broncos came out on top in a big way, collecting 10 hits and scoring eight runs.
B-K was the first to score as Molly Hartwig led off the top of the third inning with a walk. Madi Barrus hit a single to score Hartwig. Barrus stole second base before Haley Beminio scored her on a single to make the score 2-0. The Eagles tied the game by adding two runs in the fourth.
B-K answered back in a big way in the sixth inning. Allie Barrus and Ashlyn Willms each hit singles before Taylor Grissom was walked to load the bases. Maddison Dougherty’s great hit to the outfield scored two Broncos. Hartwig collected an RBI single, scoring Grissom from third base. Addison McMurray followed with a single to score Dougherty. Madi Barrus hit a deep fly ball to left field and reached base on an error that scored two Broncos to put B-K ahead 8-3.
The Broncos played solid defense, making the plays when it counted, and claimed the conference win.
