The Belmond-Klemme softball team hosted Algona Garrigan June 14 for the second conference matchup of the season.
The Broncos beat the Golden Bears earlier, but found themselves in a 2-0 deficit to start the game. Good defense by B-K kept AG from scoring again until the fifth inning.
The Broncos had opportunities to score, but left three runners on base in the third inning and two more in the fourth. AG added runs in the fifth and seventh inning to lead 4-0. The Broncos’ sole run was scored in the sixth after a lead-off single by Ashlynn Willms, who scored off a single by Emilee Dougherty. B-K took the loss 4-1.
On the following night, the Broncos hosted a triangular with AGWSR and Newman.
In the opening game, the Broncos scored first. Allison Barrus led off the first inning with a double and scored off a hit to centerfield by Ashlynn Willms. AGWSR answered in the top of the second inning.
In the next inning, Jennah Meyer and Molly Hartwig collected hits and scored off a two-RBI single by Emilee Dougherty.
In the fourth, B-K added another three runs. The scoring started off with back-to-back walks for Addison McMurray and Madison Barrus who both scored. Willms singled and scored off a hit by Ava Negrete. B-K had the biggest lead of the night, 6-2.
AGWSR came back in the seventh inning to tie the game 6-6 taking both teams into extra innings. The Cougars scored two runs in the eighth, and held the Broncos to a scoreless, winning 8-6.
In the second game, Newman jumped to a 4-0 lead. The Broncos remained scoreless until the sixth with Newman leading 6-0. Aubrey Eckhoff and Addison McMurray scored off a sacrifice bunt by Madison Barrus, fielder’s choice by Allison Barrus and a single by Ashlynn Willms.
The Broncos trailed 8-2 when their last chance came up in the seventh. Consecutive walks issued to Molly Hartwig, Emilee Dougherty and Eckhoff loaded the bases. McMurray hit a single that pushed two runs across the plate. A fielder’s choice from Madison Barrus scored Eckhoff, and an error on a ground ball hit by Allison Barrus scored McMurray, but that ended the B-K scoring. The Broncos came up short, 8-6.
The Broncos traveled to Lake Mills June 17 for the second match-up against the Bulldogs. The Broncos had the first win earlier in the season, but the Bulldogs were ready for a home victory.
LM pulled ahead 4-0 in the second inning and scored another three runs in the fourth.
Ashlynn Willms, Molly Hartwig and Jennah Meyer each scored to pull B-K within three runs. In the fifth inning, Willms singled and came around to score off a fielder’s choice from Emilee Dougherty.
The Bulldogs added three more runs to take the biggest lead of the night, 10-5, and held the Broncos from scoring to take the win.
B-K wrapped up a difficult week by hosting Eagle Grove.
The Eagles scored two runs at the top of the first, but the Broncos answered back to tie the game. Addison McMurray and Allison Barrus each reached base off an outfielder’s error, allowing both players to score off a single by Ashlynn Willms.
The Eagles added one more run in the second inning but B-K scored four times to take the lead 6-3. Aubrey Eckhoff reached first off a fielder’s choice, followed by walk to Jennah Meyer. Madison Barrus loaded the bases with a single down the left field line. Allison Barrus followed with a single, scoring Eckhoff and Meyer. Both Barrus girls came around to score off a passed ball and a single by Willms.
The Eagles added two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth inning to close the gap, but still trailed 8-6.
In the top of the final inning, the Eagles tied the game 8-8. But B-K was not taking the loss and started the bottom of the seventh with a double to left center by Allison Barrus. The Eagles intentionally walked Willms but Barrus’ speed allowed her to score with ease on a hit up the middle by Molly Hartwig, clinching the 9-8 victory.
