The Belmond-Klemme girls basketball team hosted Forest City before the holiday break Dec. 22. The warm-ups were a festive sight with both teams wearing “Ugly Sweaters” instead of their usual warmup attire.
The Indians jumped to a 2-0 lead, but the Broncos bounced right back on a pass from Molly Hartwig to Jennah Meyer to tie the game. FC pulled ahead 7-2, but Madi Barrus’ offensive rebound and pass to Meyer pulled the Broncos within three points. Meyer continued to help out with a defensive rebound and drive to the basket to give the Broncos an 8-7 lead. The Indians battled back as the quarter came to an end, winning 13-9.
In the second quarter, Meyer scored on an out-of-bounds play, followed by a layup by Ashlynn Willms. B-K trailed 19-13. The Indians went on a nine-point run before Addison McMurray hit a three-pointer followed by a Madison Barrus jumper. The Broncos headed to the locker room trailing 36-18.
In the second half, an early 4-0 run gave the Indians an even larger lead, but the Broncos continued to battle. Scores by Meyer, Hartwig and McMurray helped the Broncos, but the host team still trailed 51-27.
In the final period, the Broncos added points by Brooke Pralle on an offensive rebound and lay-up, along with Allison Barrus and McMurray hitting three-pointers. The Broncos took the conference loss, 58-37, after a hard fought battle.
