The Belmond-Klemme girls basketball team traveled to Humboldt to play the Wildcats Jan. 6.
The Wildcats jumped to a 4-0 lead before Haley Beminio hit a lay-up and followed up with a free throw to make the score 4-3. Humboldt then went on a 12-2 run. A fast-paced offense and tough defense gave B-K trouble early. Before the quarter ended, Addison McMurray added a steal and lay-up making the score 23-9 in Humboldt’s favor.
McMurray continued to have a great second quarter with another steal and score, followed by a lay-up, to make the score 42-23 at the half.
The Broncos played catch up in the third quarter and did a great job getting closer to the Wildcats. Jennah Meyer and Beminio had a two-point play to start the quarter. Meyer pulled down two rebounds and sank a free throw as B-K made a run. As the quarter came to an end, Beminio sank a shot under the basket to push the score to 60-34.
McMurray hit a jump shot followed by a three-pointer. Madi Barrus collected her seventh steal of the game. With the score 63-46, the Broncos added another steal and lay-up by McMurray. The Bronco defense allowed only five points in the final period and the offense went on a 17-5 run, but B-K took the loss 65-51.
The Broncos faced off against the top-ranked team in the state at Britt Jan. 7.
The West Hancock Eagles started with a 23-0 run before Jennah Meyer scored two points for the Broncos. After the first quarter, the Broncos had work to do, trailing 30-4.
To start the second, Barrus was fouled on a drive, and sank both free throws. Meyer would follow with the same, and went 2-2 at the line to make the score 37-8. The Broncos scored a few more times before the quarter ended. A pass from Beminio to Barrus under the basket made the score 52-12 at half.
The Eagles went on a 14-0 run to start the half as quick transitions and a good defense was the Eagles’ key to success. Beminio was the first to score in the second half as the Broncos only scored once before head ing into the fourth quarter.
Molly Hartwig hit a three-pointer and Addison McMurray added a jump shot as B-K took the tough loss 71-23.
The Broncos faced county rival Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Jan. 9.
The Cowgirls jumped to a 3-0 start before Haley Beminio’s big rebound and put-back for two points. With a steal by Addison McMurray, she was fouled and went 1-2 at the line. The Cowgirls added another five points to make the score 12-3 in their favor. Madi Barrus caught a pass from Beminio for a lay-up to make the score 17-5 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second, McMurray found Beminio under the basket for two points. Beminio continued to play tough and hit free throws late in the quarter to make the score 21-8. Before the quarter ended, Molly Hartwig hit a jump shot as the Broncos headed to the locker room trailing 35-10.
The Broncos had their work cut out for them in the second half, but Beminio and Meyer did their parts scoring early. The Cowgirls took advantage of turnovers though, and continued to add big points before the third quarter ended 45-20 in the Cowgirls’ favor.
The Broncos would not give up though. In the fourth, Madi Barrus had a steal and passed to Meyer for a quick two points. McMurray also had a good quarter, adding two more points followed by a three-point play from Meyer. B-K put on a run late as Hartwig and Barrus each collected two more points. The Broncos were not able to reach the Cowgirls, as CGD won 51-36.
