The Belmond-Klemme softball team opened the season May 23 by hosting Algona Garrigan.

The Broncos jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Pitcher Emilee Dougherty held the Golden Bears scoreless through three innings. In the bottom of the third inning, B-K added another run as Molly Hartwig scored on a passed ball.

Garrigan tied the game in the top of the fourth with three singles, but the Broncos re-claimed the lead in the bottom of the inning. Allie Barrus led off after she was hit by a pitch; Barrus then stole two bases, putting herself on third base. A sacrifice fly by Hartwig allowed Barrus to score.

That lead would not last long as the Golden Bears added four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to jump ahead 13-7.

Trailing 14-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos made a run for the game. Lead-off walks by Aubrey Eckoff and Jennah Meyer allowed Barrus’ single that rolled to the fence to score both Broncos. Ashlynn Willms and Hartwig also reached base. All three base runners scored on a single by Dougherty. Trailing 14-12, Dougherty scored on a single by Quinn Gabrielson to put the Broncos within one. But the Golden Bears held off the Broncos and claimed the 14-13 victory.

The Broncos hosted Eagle Grove May 27.

The Eagles took an early lead 1-0. The Broncos answered with Jennah Meyer leading off the inning with a walk and two stolen bases. Allie Barrus hit a single to left field, scoring Meyer to tie the game.

The Eagles added another five runs in the top of the second inning before Ella Negrete came in as relief pitcher. The Broncos did not score again until the bottom of the third. Aubrey Eckhoff reached first base, as did Meyer, from a single to the outfield. Both Broncos scored thanks to a single by Barrus. The Broncos trailed 6-3.

Ella Negrete had a great night on the mound, collecting strike-out after strike-out or throwing a pop fly for her infielders. B-K added another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth on single by Quinn Gabrielson and grabbed the lead, 7-6. The Eagles added three more runs in the next inning to give EG a 9-7 advantage.

However, the Broncos battled back though to tie the game. Molly Hartwig and Ashlynn Willms each reached base to start the inning before Ava Negrete’s single to center field brought in both runners to tie the game at nine. Pitcher Negrete continued to help on the mound with two strike-outs to end the top of the last inning, giving the Broncos a fighting chance.

Meyer led off with a single, advancing to second on a HBP. With two outs, Willms’ clutch single to left center field scored Meyer for the 10-9 win.
