The Belmond-Klemme boys basketball team welcomed Algona Garrigan Dec. 1 to start the 2020-21 season.
The Broncos started off the game with a pass to Kaleb Carlson from Carson Lane to tie the game 2-2. AG used size and speed to jump to a 9-2 lead before Alex Bartz hit a threepointer making the score 9-5. Both Lane and Jordan Meyer each scored by hitting jumpers in the lane. However, the Broncos trailed 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.
B-K played a great second quarter with scores coming from Carlson, Bartz and Lane to keep the game close, 17-15. Carlson tied up the ball game 17-17 to get the Bronco crowd on their feet. The Golden Bears went on a 10-2 run before Tyreon Franklin hit a two-point buzzer beater, making the score 27-21 in the first half.
Triston Yoder’s three-pointer started the Bronco scoring in the second half. Bartz followed up with a three-pointer himself, but the Golden Bears’ size was just too much to handle as the Broncos fell behind 49-31.
In the fourth, Carlson had a three-pointer to start the quarter and played great defense on one of the toughest players in the conference. Yoder was the last Bronco to score before the game ended. The Broncos played an excellent defensive game, but came up short, 65-36.
In the second game of the week, the Broncos hosted Lake Mills Dec. 4.
Juan Gomez started off the night with a drive to the basket to give the Broncos the early lead. Back and forth defense by both teams led to an excellent first quarter. Gomez hit a three-pointer midway through the quarter, as the Broncos trailed 13-12 to end the first quarter.
B-K took advantage of fouls as Triston Yoder and Jordan Meyer each made both their free throws, but B-K still trailed 21-16. The Bulldogs went on a 7-2 run before Carson Lane made both of his free throws to pull B-K closer. As the quarter was coming to and end, LM took advantage of mistakes and scored twelve points to lead 40-26 as the teams headed to the lockerroom.
In the second half, the Broncos put up a few points early with baskets by Yoder and Meyer. LM added ten more points before Lane hit a three-pointer. The Broncos put up a big fight, but trailed 57-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
B-K made a run with back-to-back three-pointers by Meyer and Lane to make the score 57-49. As the game was coming to an end, Meyer hit a three-pointer to pull B-K within five, 57-52. LM ended the game, scoring four more points as the Broncos took the loss 61-52.
In the final game of the week the Broncos played in the Top of Iowa Conference cross over game against the Central Springs Panthers Dec. 5.
The Broncos jump to a quick 4-0 lead with baskets from Kaleb Carlson and Jordan Meyer. The lead was extended by three with a pass from Carson Lane to Meyer as he hit a lay-up and made the free throw. The Panthers made their way back into the game, B-K held onto the early lead, 10-8, to end the first quarter.
CS took over the lead, 20-12, in the second period and the Broncos had to play catch-up for the remaining time. Tyreon Franklin made both free throws late to keep B-K in the game, 20-14. As the quarter came to an end, Meyer hit a three-pointer to make the score 23-17 heading into the break.
In the second half, Lane started off with a two-pointer followed by a lay-up as the Broncos trailed, 23-21. Juan Gomez had a long three-pointer, but the Panther went on a 7-2 run to end the quarter with the Broncos trailing 34-28.
The final quarter was filled with excitement as the Broncos nearly doubled their score. Outstanding basketball by Meyer, Carlson, Lane, Gomez, Alex Bartz and Triston Yoder made for a lasting memory as the Broncos would add twenty points to the score board and overtake the Panthers. With seconds left, a steal by Gomez and pass to Carlson gave the Broncos their first lead, 45-44, since the first quarter. The Broncos did not give up and held on to their lead, winning the first game of the season 52-50.
