The Belmond-Klemme boys basketball team hosted Bishop Garrigan to open the winter season Dec. 3.
The Broncos would have a rough start as the Golden Bears started the game on a 10-0 run. Carson Lane added the first points from the Broncos with two points before the quarter ended with BG leading 19-2.
In the second quarter, Triston Yoder added a lay-up with the Broncos trailing 24-4. The offensive side of the game struggled in the first half as the Broncos headed to the locker room trailing 44-10 with work to do in the second half.
In the third quarter, Kaleb Carlson scored the first Bronco points of the half, followed by Jordan Meyer draining a three-pointer to bring the score to 50-17. The Broncos played tough defense, holding BG to only ten points.
In the final period, Lane hit a big three-pointer, followed by a steal by Meyer. B-K played a good second half, but the Golden Bears are a top contender and took the first conference win, 67-27.
The Bronco boys traveled to Lake Mills to face the top-ranked team in the conference Dec. 6.
The Bulldogs had a big first quarter rolling to a 26-7 lead. Quick offense by the Bulldogs gave B-K trouble. However, the Broncos doubled the points scored in the first quarter. Alex Bartz and Lane led the team in first half scoring as B-K headed to the locker room down 47-21.
The Broncos continued to put up big effort in the second half, but the Bulldogs were too much and finished off the game with a 71-35 win.
The Bronco leaders included Bartz with nine points and Lane with eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
On Dec. 7, the Broncos traveled to Central Springs for a cross-over TIC East game. The Broncos played an outstanding game with back-and-forth scoring between both teams.
A three-pointer by Triston Yoder started the game, followed by four points by Alex Bartz. B-K had the lead, 12-10, at the end of the quarter.
In the second period, Juan Gomez had a steal, along with Jordan Meyer, to help the Bronco defense. Yoder helped B-K late with eight points, but the Broncos trailed by three, 24-21, at the halftime break.
The back and forth would be fun for both crowds as all the players put in a huge effort. Yoder and Kaleb Carlson each scored quickly and kept B-K within one point at the end of the third, 33-32.
The Broncos played a great defensive fourth quarter and came back to take the lead, 39-38, on a basket by Dylan Anderson. As the clock ticked down to the final seconds, Lane tied the game up 50-50 and the teams headed to overtime.
In the extra period, B-K dominated the Panthers as Meyer and Lane each added two points and Cesar Duran was fouled after a steal. Meyer finished off the game with a rebound and hit his free throws to take the win 55-52.
Lane led the team with 15 points followed by Yoder with 14 points. Lane also led the team with eight rebounds and seven assists. Meyer had seven rebounds along with an impressive six steals.
