The Belmond-Klemme boys basketball team travelled to Britt for a conference matchup with West Hancock Jan. 7.
The Broncos started with a pass from Carson Lane to Jordan Meyer for a quick lay-up that tied the game 2-2. Lane had his first steal of the game and was fouled driving the lane; he hit one of his two chances at the free throw line. The Eagles jumped to an 8-3 lead before Dylan Anderson scored after a pass from Jaace Weidemann to push the score to 8-5 as the quarter ended.
In the second period, B-K fought back and Meyer hit a three-pointer to tie the game 12-12. WH pulled ahead by six points before Juan Gomez scored. A rebound by Yoder and a pass to Weidemann made the score 20-18 heading into the locker room.
Meyer clinched the lead at the start of a new half with a three-pointer, followed by Lane going 2-2 at the line to keep the B-K lead, 23-22. The Eagles went on a nine-point run before Meyer hit another three-pointer as the quarter ended. The Broncos trailed 31-26.
In the fourth, Yoder hit both free throws as did Anderson to push B-K closer, 35-30. With 4:22 left in the game, Weidemann was fouled and went 2-2, putting the Broncos within three. The Eagles went on a run, and the Broncos just couldn’t catch up, taking the conference loss 44-36.
The Broncos faced county rival Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Jan. 9.
A fast start gave the Cowboys a 5-2 lead. Jordan Meyer added two points followed by Carson Lane’s steal and basket that put the Broncos ahead 7-5. B-K continued to control the game as Juan Gomez was the next Bronco to score. B-K finished the quarter up 11-8.
The Cowboys tied the game 11-11 to start the second quarter and eventually led 19-15. The Broncos showed great defense, giving the home team the opportunity to score before the half. Dylan Anderson did his part hitting both free throws. Lane had one final steal and drive that tied the game 23-23. With seconds left, Lane was fouled again, and his free throws gave the Broncos the lead 25-23 heading into the locker room.
But the momentum would not last in the second half. It was all Cowboys as the Broncos struggled to find the basket. CGD ended the third quarter ahead 43-31.
Triston Yoder added a quick two points, but the Broncos rhythm just was not like it was in the first half. The Cowboys continued to take advantage of turnovers and missed shots. The Cowboys prevailed 62-38.
