The Belmond-Klemme boys basketball team traveled to Eagle Grove Dec. 8.
Carson Lane was the first to score to give the Broncos the early lead 2-0. Great defense by the Broncos made it difficult for the Eagles to score. Jordan Meyer and Kaleb Carlson each added points as the Broncos led 9-2 at the end of the quarter.
Meyer hit a three pointer to start the second period. The Bronco defense had three steals, scoring on each to give B-K the biggest lead of the night, 17-6. Meyer collected another three-pointer late, followed by Brian Duran’s two-point basket under the basket. The Broncos won the first half, 21-8.
Triston Yoder had his own three-pointer to start the second half. Yoder scored again off a pass by Lane, and the Broncos stayed up, 29-11. Outstanding defense and offense made it difficult for the Eagles to get into a rhythm. Juan Gomez and Yoder contributed points as the quarter ended with B-K up 34-22.
The Broncos continued to have a great game with solid defense, teamwork and quick baskets. Lane was 4-4 at the free throw line while Carlson hit a jumper from within the lane as the Broncos took their first conference win, 46-35.
The Broncos welcomed Garner-Hayfield-Ventura to Luick Gymnasium Dec. 11.
The Cardinals jumped to an early 3-0 lead before Triston Yoder answered with a three-pointer to tie the game. Kaleb Carlson added his own three-pointer to keep B-K within reach of the Cardinals, 7-6. The Broncos’ tough defense kept the score close. Alex Bartz and Jordan Meyer scored before the Cardinals went on a 11-2 run and the Broncos trailed 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Meyer’s three-pointer gave the Broncos a boost of energy at the start of the second. But GHV took advantage of any mistake the Broncos made late, and pulled ahead 51-23 to end the first half.
The Broncos never gave up in the second half, as Lane had a quick drive and score. Juan Gomez and Carlson each added points, but the game was just too far out of reach as the Cardinals added 21 points to the board and led 72-37 at the end of the third.
Carlson started the final quarter with a jumper within the lane followed by a steal by Gomez. Gomez headed to the free throw line and made both throws, but it wouldn’t be enough as B-K lost 82-50.
