The new Belmond-Klemme soccer teams will compete in the North Central Conference. The school board accepted an invitation from the NCC on Nov. 19.
“This was a very propitious opportunity for us,” Superintendent Dan Frazier said. He said B-K was having trouble scheduling games with nearby schools since not many offer soccer. B-K is the only district in Wright County with soccer. Only two of the 18 teams in the Top of Iowa Conference offer the sport. Garner-Hayfield-Ventura has also been invited to play in the NCC.
Five NCC teams play soccer: Clear Lake, Hampton-Dumont, Humboldt, Iowa Falls-Alden, and Webster City. These are the schools that B-K athletes played when they participated in a shared program with H-D.
B-K’s first season with soccer was supposed to be spring 2020. The Iowa governor cancelled all spring sports when the Covid-19 outbreak began.
