Ron Steveson

Ronald “RS” Steveson, 79, Tempe, AZ, formerly of Belmond, died Dec. 10, 2021 after a brief but courageous battle with a glioblastoma. Services were held Dec. 28 at Friendship Village Skirm Auditorum in Tempe.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Valley or Belmond-Klemme Scholarship Foundation II.

Ron was born July 25, 1942 in Marshalltown to Don and Eva (Samson) Steveson. His family moved to Sac City when he was in elementary school. He met his wife-to-be, Sonnee Olson, at Sac City High School. They married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City on Aug. 17, 1963.

Ron (also known as Ronnie, Rex, RS, Coach, Dad, and most proudly Boppa) graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a teaching degree in 1966. He taught for three years in Waverly before going to University of Houston on a Science Foundation scholarship, earning a masters degree in geology.

In 1970, Ron, Sonnee and son Derek moved to Belmond where he taught junior high earth science and coached cross country and track for nearly 30 years. Ron and Sonnee raised their family (Derek and daughter Jennifer) in Belmond until they purchased lake property in Ventura in 1990. Ron commuted to continue teaching and coaching in Belmond until his retirement in 1999. RS continued to coach cross country for several more years in Belmond and then in Phoenix at Desert Vista High School with his nephew Chris. He made such an impact on so many lives as a caring and compassionate coach, as we have witnessed in the wonderful posts on Facebook and the mail/email received from so many of his “kids.” Just know that you all impacted his life as well. He enjoyed following former classmates, students, and runners on Facebook.

After being snowbirds in Arizona for a few years, Ron and Sonnee made the permanent move to Phoenix after the birth of their most special grandson, Eli Jax. In 2017 they moved to Friendship Village in Tempe where Ron found many new friends. He would make his rounds on his scooter, and everyone knew him!

On Nov. 10, 2021, Ron received very tough news that he had an aggressive brain tumor and not much time left. Instead of having very invasive surgery, he chose to go home to spend his remaining time with family and friends. He was able to say goodbye, which was very important to him.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister Eva Lee; father- and mother-in-law Don and Doris Olson; and brother Rick Steveson.

Ron will be greatly missed by his wife Sonnee; son Derek of Phoenix; daughter Jenny and her son Eli of Phoenix; sister Sandra Hanson of Mesa, AZ; brother Steve (Stephanie) Steveson of Indianola; sister-in-law Kathie Steveson; sister-in-law Tammy Beschen of Wenatchee, WA; sister-in-law Laura Olson of Decorah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and others who were fortunate to call him friend.
