Mabel “Mickey/Mick” was born July 26, 1936 in rural Dumont, the daughter of John and Martha (Viet) Wubbena. She was quickly given her nickname because she loved Mickey Mouse. At the age of seven her family moved to Coulter where she attended Franklin Consolidated Schools. She played basketball and was in the band.
She met Wesley Meyer at a skating rink, and they were married Aug. 3, 1956. They lived in Latimer until they moved to the Meyer family farm. She loved living on the farm and being a housewife. It gave her time to care for their three girls, which was her biggest joy.
She attended most of her daughters’ school activities, and served as president of the Band Mothers at CAL. Mabel loved going on bike rides in the evening with the girls. She was very involved at Trinity Lutheran in Hampton as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, and served as president of the ladies aid. Mabel was a 4-H leader for many years.
In 1972 she and Wesley built a 13,000 bird chicken house that became a full-time job for her. In the early 80’s she worked at Boyt in Iowa Falls where she sewed soft-sided luggage.
She loved to bake and was known for her cookies, popcorn balls, peanut brittle, caramel corn, and potato salad.
She loved her cats, and enjoyed growing flowers. It made her happy to watch birds, squirrels, rabbits, and deer outside her kitchen window.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wesley; youngest daughter LuJean Meyer-Howery; sister Irma; brother Willis; and nephew Marty Wubbena.
Mabel is survived by her daughters Colette (Kevin) Westaby of Belmond, and Kim Meyer of Pleasant Hill; son-in law Bond Howery of Huber Heights, OH; grandson Jesse (Sarah) Westaby of Alexander and their children Micaiah, Hadassah, Jonas, Naomi and Asa; granddaughter Casey (Chris) LaCommare of Fullerton, CA and their children Connor and Lincoln; brother Carlton (Beverly) Wubbena of N. San Juan, CA; and sister-in-law Connie Wubbena of Iowa Falls.
