Lu Steinbock

Bessie “LuAnn” Steenblock, 77, Belmond, died Aug. 27, 2020 at the Clarion Health and Wellness Center. Services were held Aug. 31 at Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond.

Bessie LuAnn, daughter of August and Beulah (Walker) Cumpston, was born March 16, 1943 in Arnold, NE. She was baptized and grew up in the Church of the Nazarene. LuAnn attended Arnold Community School and Sunshine Bible Academy in South Dakota. She settled in north central Iowa after visiting over the holidays with a friend from Kanawha who also attended the Bible academy.

LuAnn married Leonard “Len” Steenblock on April 29, 1961. Their union was blessed with sons Paul and John. LuAnn was a life-long homemaker and enjoyed raising her boys and supporting them in their endeavors.

After moving to Belmond in 1959, Lu was employed as a CNA at the Belmond Hospital, the Mello Maid restaurant, PSI, and P & G Deli. Eventually she worked in the veterinary office of Dr. Warden. Her dogs Josie and Emma were a delight to her in later years.

She had been active in the Belmond United Methodist Church and the functions of the UMW. Len and Lu were active in card club and looked forward to outings to play Bridge and visit with friends and family. She was a strong, kind lady who took great solace in the simple things of life. Lu relished her closest friends and did not focus on materialism or the spotlight. LuAnn was fiercely loyal to her friends and those she loved.  She faced a number of health challenges over the years and knew much about affliction. Her faith in God was strengthened through these experiences.

She was preceded in death by parents; step father Harold Markee; sister Elyene Andre; and brother Dean Cumpston.

LuAnn lives on in the lives of Len Steenblock of Belmond; son Paul (Sue) Steenblock of Denver, CO and their children Melissa, Micaela and Cameron; son John Steenblock of Garner; and her siblings Marlon (Marge) Cumpston of Calloway, NE, Charlie (Kathleen) Cumpston of North Platte, NE, and Perry (Shirley) Cumpston of Nebraska.
