Loretta D. Smith, 89, Belmond, died Nov. 27, 2019 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Services were held Nov. 30 at the Belmond United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Loretta Dorothy, the daughter of Verdie and Mary (Goodridge) Anderson, was born in Twin Lake Township near Goodell on Aug. 26, 1930. Her father died when she was five, and her mom raised the children on her own. Loretta attended country school and graduated from Klemme High School.
Loretta married Don L. Smith on Aug. 20, 1950 at the Belmond Methodist Church. Don served in the U.S. Army, and upon returning from the service, they began their family.
Loretta was a life-long homemaker, loving wife, nurturing mother and doting grandmother. She had been employed as a telephone operator, at the Mello Maid, and at Printing Services for 30 years.
Loretta was always concerned for her family’s well being, no matter where they were or what their ages. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Loretta enjoyed helping Don and her kids with their trapping, and looked forward to hearing about their excursions.
Loretta and Don enjoyed times with special friends. She loved her yard and raising flowers and petunias. She enjoyed pottery and sold lawn ornaments her daughter painted. She also enjoyed garage sales and listening to the radio. She lived north of City Park for a few years before moving to the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond in December 2014.
She was preceded in death by husband Don (July 22, 1997); infant son Bruce; brothers Leonard, Harvey and Harold Anderson; sisters Harriet Halfpop and Marian Kinseth; half-brother Clifford Anderson; and half-sister Mary Prelip.
Her memory will continue in the hearts and minds of her daughter Patty Halfpop (companion Mark Jeffers) of Belmond; sons Mike (Karen) Smith of Belmond, Brian Smith (companion Jolene Robbins) of Belmond, and Terry (Susan) Smith of Robins; grandchildren Jason, Marshall, Nick, Joseph, Austin, Yashua, Katie, Quinton, Mercedes, Hannah and Brandon, Matthew and Mariah; and brother-in-law Roland (Marge) Kinseth of Belmond.
