Elsie Reese, 104, died May 17, 2019 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Services were held May 21 at the First Reformed Church in Alexander. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.
Elsie was born July 5, 1914 to Adolph and Minnie Eden. She graduated from Alexander High School in 1931, then took Normal Training (teaching) at Cedar Falls. She taught rural school for four years near Rowan.
Elsie married Mervin “Pete” Reese of Rowan in 1937, and they were blessed with children Jerelyn and Terry. She always remembered the wonderful family gatherings and vacations.
She worked at the ASCS office in Clarion for six years. The highlight of her widowed years was being a dorm housemother at Iowa State for five years, then at Waldorf College four years. Elsie was loved by the college girls she lived with, and they showed their respect by taking her to functions on campus.
Later, she joined the Alexander Kitchen Klatter Band and entertained in small towns around the area. She took vacations to Europe, especially loving Switzerland. For several winters she visited her sister in Texas and enjoyed painting classes and sewing projects. Her hobbies included traveling, reading, puzzles, all kinds of card games, sewing, and watching television. She was befriended by all who knew her. She was a lady in every respect and always dressed to the nines. Her hair and makeup were perfect daily. She was a devout Christian and active in her church.
Elsie moved to the Rehabilitation Center in 2010.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sister Edythe Wilson; and brothers Edward and Jelto Eden.
Survivors include her children Jerelyn Adams (John) of Ames, and Terry Reese of Flushing, MI; grandchildren Kimberly Smith of Ames and Kristin Groepper (Dan) of Des Moines; great-grandchildren Dylan and Alec Smith, and Hanna, Clair, Jack and Ben Groepper; and great-great-grandchildren Charlotte and Kennedy.
