This field of sunflowers on public land southwest of Belmond on 150th Street near Morse Lake has been a popular place to visit the past couple of weeks. Locals used to seeing farm fields of mostly corn and soybeans are visiting the large planting of yellow blooms. A number of people have taken family photos.   North and South Dakota are the top sunflower producing states, each generating about 800 million pounds per year. Iowa produces just the tiniest fraction of that amount. State crop statistics don’t even mention sunflowers.
