An engineer to design the next phase of Third Street NE reconstruction was hired Monday night by the Belmond City Council. Snyder and Associates of Fort Dodge will be paid up to $333,000 for designing and overseeing the work.
The city expects to completely rebuild five blocks of Third Street NE (between 1st Avenue and 6th Avenue) and one block of 2nd Avenue NE (between Third Street and Fourth Street) next summer. Plans will be drawn up in the next few months, and bids will be solicited in late winter.
If all goes as scheduled, there will be lots of construction and many detours next summer. Highway 69 north of Belmond will be closed for many months while two bridges north of town are replaced.
Police Chief Rick McDaniel told members of the council they should remind people they meet to lock their doors and lock their vehicles.
“With the current economy, thefts are on the rise,” said the chief. “I know Belmond is a small town, but people need to protect their property. They need to take precautions.”
