The opening date of Belmond’s Luick Memorial Swimming Pool is still up in the air for 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak. In a normal year, the pool opens on Memorial Day weekend.

  City Manager Darrel Steven Carlyle told the city council May 18 night he is waiting to hear the official word from the Governor about opening swimming pools in Iowa. (On May 22, Carlyle said again that he is awaiting further information before deciding about the summer swimming season.)

  Meanwhile, Public Works Director Justin Fournier said his men have prepared the pool for service, but have not yet filled it with water, pending directions from the state.

  The council also discussed when to open City Hall to the public. It was agreed that since the number of Covid-19 cases in Wright County rose over the past week, it would be prudent to continue limited access to the building until at least June 1.

  Carlyle said city business is moving along well despite the building closure. Many people are paying their water and sewer bills over the telephone using a credit card, he added.
