TEN YEARS AGO- 2012
The kitchen at Belmond’s new hospital is finally complete. Last week the staff began serving meals in the new dining area. Food is served cafeteria style. There is a different breakfast entree every morning. Lunch and supper menus are on a six-week rotation, plus there is soup, sandwiches and a salad bar every day.
TWENTY YEARS AGO - 2002
Dozens of wind generators are appearing west of Goodell and north toward Duncan. The Hancock County wind farm will eventually have 148 giant towers that are 200 feet high with propeller blades 75 feet long.
THIRTY YEARS AGO - 1992
The Belmond Jaycees and other volunteers formed a large crew Sunday to install Christmas decorations downtown and along Highway 69. The group of 40 or more persons finished the job quickly.
FORTY YEARS AGO - 1982
Helping hands gathered at the Herbert Basener farm last week to harvest 70 acres of corn. Herbert recently broke his collar bone in a fall. The group arrived with four combines, several tractors and wagons, and a truck. Several women helped Mrs. Basener feed the group when the work was done.
FIFTY YEARS AGO - 1972
The Belmond Fire Department was called to a blazing inferno at the Joe Ziller farm, rented by ACCO Seeds and tenanted by David Heimstra. The barn and an adjoining feed shed were a total loss as well as 140 head of five-week-old pigs. Firemen were successful in containing the fire before it reached two other hog houses close by. The cause is under investigation.
SIXTY YEARS AGO - 1962
Three new members of the Belmond Fire Department are Don Wood, Richard Kling and Gordon Sandman.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO - 1952
The mayor and other workers spent Thanksgiving afternoon clearing snow from Main Street that fell on Wednesday. The mayor drove an open tractor with a loader on the front and chains on the tires.
