Two new stop signs will appear soon as a result of action at the June 6 Belmond City Council meeting.

Police Chief Rick McDaniel recommended the placing of stop signs on 1st Street NE — both east and west — where it crosses 4th Avenue NE. That intersection, a block north of the pharmacy, has been the scene of a number of accidents the past couple of years.

McDaniel said vehicles are often driving too fast on 1st Street NE because there are stop signs on 1st, 2nd and 3rd Avenues coming from Highway 69. He said it makes the most sense to stop traffic on 1st Street NE because 4th Avenue already has stop signs a block south and two blocks north of the intersection in question.

  The council agreed.
