Former mayor Alan Mattison is likely to become the newest member of the Belmond City Council.

  At the Nov. 2 election there was a write-in vote for an upcoming vacancy on the city council. Former councilman Earl Kalkwarf received seven votes, and Mattison received six.

  This past Monday night Kalkwarf appeared before the council and said he would decline the position. He stated that Mattison told him he would accept the job. The Independent contacted Mattison by phone after the council meeting, and he stated he would fill the vacant spot.

  A new face will be seen around City Hall. The council approved the hiring of Jerrod Littlejohn of Clarion as a new member of the police department.

  Littlejohn graduated from Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School in 2016 and then earned a degree in criminal science from Waldorf College in Forest City. Recently be began an EMT class through Iowa Specialty Hospital.

  Police Chief Rick McDaniel told city leaders, “He will be an excellent member for our police department. He has a college degree, and he has already passed our local written test and physical fitness tests. He will have no trouble at the police academy.”
