Grain accident

A man died late Monday afternoon in a grain bin accident in Belmond. According to Fire Chief Dean Adcock, workers were cleaning soybeans from a bin at MaxYield Co-op in Belmond when a mound of beans slid down the side of the bin, burying a man who was inside.

Crews from the fire department, ambulance and police were called to the scene, along with a helicopter from Mercy Hospital.

Adcock said firemen could not find the victim at first, and special grain entrapment equipment was put into use. The body of Victor Diaz, a seasonal contract worker, was removed from the bin after about an hour.
