The federal government has decided to extend the free school breakfasts and lunches program through the end of the 2020-21 school year. The meals are available to all school children, regardless of income.

The free meals are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to a press release from the USDA, “This unprecedented move is part of USDA’s unwavering commitment to ensuring all children across America have access to nutritious food as the nation recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Belmond-Klemme school district is included in the program. However, it was pointed out that only one breakfast and lunch is available at no charge. Any student “double punching” or requesting seconds will have to pay for the second meal.
