The Belmond Police Department wants to hand out plenty of tickets this summer – but the recipients will be glad to get them.
The department has again partnered with local businesses to hand out “tickets” when officers see kids wearing helmets while riding bikes or scooters, skateboarding or roller skating. The tickets are actually coupons, good for a free small ice cream cone at the Belmond Drive In, Casa Chameleon or Bloemke Pharmacy.
“We just want to promote safety with kids and within our community,” Police Chief Rick McDaniel said. “It’s a way for police to give kids another incentive to wear helmets when having fun outside and have a positive interaction with police.”
