A Belmond man died in a house fire on Friday, Nov. 23 at 112 2nd Street SE (directly east of Casey’s). The blaze was reported about 2 p.m. Thick smoke poured from the rental home, preventing a police officer from going inside. Firemen arrived, searched the dwelling, and after a time removed the body of Paul Dayton, age 58. Firemen then re-entered the structure and extinguished the blaze. The state fire marshal arrived about 6 p.m. to make an inspection, an official said.
The house, owned by Kevin and Deb Knoll, was “significantly damaged” according to an official. Further details regarding the cause of the fire and Mr. Dayton’s death will not be available until reports are issued from the state medical examiner and the state fire marshal.
