Construction could already be underway on the addition on the north side of Belmond’s hospital. After several delays, the city council gave final approval Jan. 16 to the closing of six feet of the alley between Iowa Specialty Hospital and the public library.

Work could begin Jan. 18, according to Cindy Hunter of ISH, project manager. She said the contractor, Henkel Construction, is anxious to put up construction fencing and bring in building materials.

The work includes a new area for an MRI machine as well as separate expansion of the outpatient department.

The entire alley will be closed for a time during construction. But once the work is done, the alley will open again, albeit six feet narrower.
