The Belmond Police Department will begin the search right away for a replacement for Sergeant Jack Murphy, who plans to retire at the end of this year.
“Right now it’s really hard to hire officers,” Chief Rick McDaniel told the city council July 6. “All sorts of small towns around us are looking and can’t find anyone. Even the big cities are having trouble, and they are offering thousands of dollars in sign-on bonuses.”
“If I can poach an officer from another department, I’ll do it,” McDaniel said. “Right now the sheriffs in Iowa are poaching city officers because the counties pay more, have better benefits, and larger staffs.”
In 2018, Belmond Officer Ray Zeien was paid .... by the city. He was then hired by the Wright County Sheriff where he made .... in 2020.
