State Representative Terry Baxter has announced his plans to retire from the Iowa House after serving out his current term in 2022. He has represented District 8.
Baxter is a co-founder of GoServe Global, a faith-based organization that provides humanitarian aid around the world. He has chosen to retire from the legislature to work full-time with GoServe as well as to spend time with his family.
Mark Thompson, a Republican who lives at Morse Lake west of Belmond, has announced his bid to replace Baxter in new House District 56. Thompson is a 20-year veteran of the Marine Corps. He served 18 years as a counterterrorism leader at the Department of State while deploying to over 60 countries. Having grown up in Eagle Grove, he returned to Iowa in 2016 and worked part-time with the U.S. Agency for International Development. Thompson is a volunteer with church youth programs and the American Legion. He also works as a substitute teacher.
Due to the 2020 Census, Iowa will have new legislative districts beginning in January 2023. Belmond will be located in new House District 56. Part of Wright County will move to District 55. Find maps of the new districts in the Nov. 18 issue of the Independent.
